ABOUT THE PROJECT

REBOUND — BALING TWINE was developed through field research in Phrom Phiram, Phitsanulok, Thailand, working with a local community skilled in weaving with baling twine. Traditionally used to create baskets with local patterns, the material and craft knowledge became the starting point for exploring new possibilities in form, function, and application.

The project introduced newly designed geometric patterns with a reduced color palette, shifting the visual language toward a simpler, more minimal expression while building on the community’s existing making skills.

Moving beyond the scale and function of traditional baskets, the patterns were developed into a larger outdoor furniture collection. Metal structures were designed as frameworks for the community to weave and apply macramé techniques according to the new patterns, transforming familiar craft processes into functional objects for contemporary living.

Through this process, REBOUND explores how design can work with existing local knowledge rather than replace it — expanding the possibilities of a familiar material and craft practice into new forms, functions, and applications.
