ABOUT THE PROJECT

MUSHROOM — MAWATA POSSIBILITIES explores new possibilities for Mawata, a silk-fiber material traditionally used as filling for quilts. Developed as part of The Cooperation III, the project was created through a material collaboration with Chul Thai Silk Co., Ltd.

Made from silk cocoon remnants left from the yarn-making process, Mawata fibers are carded and formed into sheets. The project experiments with techniques such as smocking, pleating, and scale-like surface manipulation to create new textures while strengthening and stabilizing the fiber structure.

Inspired by organic forms found in nature, the resulting lighting objects preserve the silk’s natural luster and translucency, allowing light to reveal the material’s layered surfaces and delicate qualities. The project explores how an overlooked material can move beyond its conventional use and take on new forms, functions, and possibilities.
